Monday Motivator- Meet Joyce

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am a professor at Roswell Park studying a group of rare cancers called soft tissue sarcomas that primarily affect children and young adults. I grew up in Michigan, but my mom was born and raised in South Buffalo near Caz Park, and I still have a ton of family in the area.  When Roswell Park recruited me in 2016, I jumped at the chance to relocate here.  I have lived and traveled all over the country, but Buffalo is by far my favorite. It simply feels like home.

What does #RevLife mean to you?

When I first walked into Rev in March of 2018, I have expected someone to look at me and say “WTF are you doing here?”  My work had been all consuming, and I hadn’t been taking care of myself.  It showed. But amazingly, you welcomed me with open arms, and I am nothing if not stubborn.  That first spin class that almost killed me turned into another and another and another until Rev was just home.  Unless I am traveling, I am there about 6 days a week.  Trainers and workout buddies have become dear friends, and I am so grateful to have been embraced by the Rev family.

We all get in the zone in different ways. Where does your head go during a workout?

I’m usually trying not to fall or die.  Let’s not give me too much credit for actually thinking.

What’s your favorite class at Rev?

These days it is a tossup between RevRow + strength and advanced TRX. I love them both. I’ll probably start loving spin again now that the 2019 Empire State Ride is over.

What’s your favorite meal/snack to eat after a tough workout?

Hi Is iced coffee a snack?  Because that is my morning go to.  In the evenings… popcorn with lots of real butter and salt.

If you have friends visiting from out of town how do you show the the perfect Buffalo day?

Wings and waterfalls!

What’s your favorite place to brunch in Buffalo?

The brunch at Roost is out of this world, but I can walk to Betty’s from home, so it gets the nod.

Early bird or night owl?

Definitely a night owl.   There is a reason I usually look like I just forced myself out of bed when I show up at Rev in the mornings.

What’s your ideal rest day look like?

Hiking, kayaking, or anything near water!

What’s your Favorite guilty pleasure song?

I’m having trouble picking just one, but they are all from the 80s. I’m old.

If you were shipwrecked on a deserted island which 2 luxury items would you want to have?

Can I bring my masseuse? And my dogs? That’s all I would really need.

Cats or Dogs?

Have I not shown you a picture of my furry bundles of love? All. The. Dogs.

If you were to win $100 million today what’s the first you do?

Build my own research foundation at Roswell Park.
