Monday Motivator: Meet Katie
Check out how this week’s Monday Motivator, Katie, gets in the zone during a workout. Hint, hint, she included a link to Mindy Kaling’s “revenge workout fantasy method.” Pretty much crying laughing over here. Read on to see what this cool chick is all about. Happy Monday!
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Hi! I grew up in Lockport but I’ve called North Buffalo home for about six years. I work at a food systems-focused nonprofit; when I’m not doing that, I’m usually flipping through a new cookbook or googling paint colors and light fixtures. My husband and I bought a very outdated, wood paneling and wallpaper-covered bungalow two years ago and have been renovating it room by room ever since.
What does #RevLife mean to you?
It means listening to myself and my body. For the longest time I had it in my head that I had to be someone who liked running even though I hate it. Runner’s high? Never heard of it! I can absolutely respect it if it’s your thing, but I’ve never enjoyed it.
When I found Rev, I was coming off of physical therapy for a years-long back and hip issue (made worse by my continued attempts to be A Person Who Runs). I wanted to get back into a safe, consistent exercise routine for my physical and mental health and Rev fit the bill. I fell in love swiftly and completely, and now I’m at the studio at least three or four times a week. I’m so happy that I finally listened to myself and found what I really wanted in a workout!
We all get in the zone in different ways. Where does your head go during a workout?
Most of the time I’m focused on hitting the choreography, but on occasion I like to employ Mindy Kaling’s revenge fantasy workout method wherein I power through a song by imagining that I am avenging my (very much alive) husband’s death, chasing down the assassins who murdered him on my bike. Too dark? Sometimes I think about the lunch I’m going to eat later that day.
What’s your favorite class at Rev?
RevRide all the way. I’m about to hit the 100 class mark (or I might have already, by the time you’re reading this) and I’m pretty sure 99 of them were RevRides. It’s all about the music and variety for me, and I’m always parked in the back corner (in front of the fan, because sweat).
What’s your favorite meal/snack to eat after a tough workout?
A piece of toasted Ezekiel bread with almond butter and banana, wolfed down in my car as I drive from class to work.
What’s your favorite dinner spot in Buffalo?
The Grange! If anyone knows the folks who run it, please ask them to open up a second location on Hertel so I don’t have to drive all the way to Hamburg.
Tacos or pizza?
Pizza (Buffalo is America’s pizza capital, after all).
Coffee or smoothie?
Early riser or night owl?
Early riser, and I am evangelical about getting eight hours of sleep.
Beach or mountains?
Mountains! I’ve hiked in the Rockies, biked down a volcano in Bali and even took my Rev gear to the top of Thailand’s highest peak last year.
Spring or summer?
Fall is the real MVP.
