Monday Motivator: Meet Valerie
You had us at “BreadHive,” Val. This week’s Monday Motivator may look familiar for two reasons. 1. She totally CRUSHES it at Rev – especially in our RevRow and RevMvmnt formats. 2. She’s a co-owner and worker at BreadHive on the West Side! (One of the many delicious food-related reasons we personally continue to workout on a regular basis.) But hey, this week it’s all about Val. So read on to hear her thoughtful answers. Or better yet. Swing by BreadHive, grab a heavenly bagel sandwich, and read on.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Hey everyone! I’m Valerie and I live on Buffalo’s west side with my husband Jordan and our 8 year old pug Miles! I am a co-worker owner at BreadHive where we make artisan bread, bagels, and pretzels. We opened a cafe on Connecticut St 2 years ago where we make sandwiches and pastries! I head our pastry department and am working to build a program (with my partner in crime, Kelly) that cues people to not just think of BreadHive’s delicious bready standards, but also our pastries! BreadHive is a worker cooperative business and we believe in sharing in equity with employees that are interested in owning their own work. I’m talking a lot about BreadHive in this section because the question is, tell us a little bit about yourself, and to be honest being apart of BreadHive has not only made me a better baker, but a better human and I can’t begin to write about myself without writing about BreadHive. Besides baking, you can find me on my day off biking around the city, drinking a Public Espresso coffee, grocery shopping at Lexington Coop, and/or walking around the Elmwood Bidwell Farmers market! I love to travel, cook, watch movies, drink beer, and listen to vinyl.
What does #RevLife mean to you?
Health. Growing up I was pretty much always overweight. I blamed that on genetics until I found myself well over 200lbs (and I’m only 5’2″). I had already lost the weight before finding Rev but Revolution provides me a space to move my body and continue to live an active life.
We all get in the zone in different ways. Where does your head go during a workout?
To be honest all I think about is how strong I am. I think about how scared and unsure I used to be and think about giving 100% to each workout I do. Looking at myself in the mirror so I can physically see the progress I’ve made, while exercising, keeps me coming back 🙂
What’s your favorite class at Rev?
Damn….I guess I gravitate towards instructors. Brandon taught BodyPump when I used to be a member at the J and he would also bring his students to BreadHive when we were just a walk up window on Baynes, so when I started at Rev I’d go to most of his classes because he was a familiar face in a sea of new people, but also maybe one of the most energetic instructors I’ve ever had! Recently, Mandy’s classes have been my jam! I really like RevRow + Strength on Monday mornings, and RevRow on Thursdays – she also just bumped Brandon on my “favorite instructor” section in my account dashboard 🙂 I also have to do a shout out to Emily because her Tuesday RevMvmt class gives me life! But whatever class I’m in if the music is calling me, you will find me singing and dancing along to the grooves because how can you not?!?
What’s your favorite meal/snack to eat after a tough workout?
I usually have a smoothie with Sun Warrior protein, because it is the best! When I worked at Lex the health and wellness manager got me hooked on the stuff and no matter how many times I stray I always go back to Vanilla Sun Warrior!
What’s your favorite way to spend a summer afternoon in Buffalo/WNY?
I think I covered most of my favorite summer things in the “about me” section, but if it’s a Saturday I love to walk, or bike, to my favorite shops in the village. After the market Jordan and I will go to Talking Leaves were I will spend the majority of the time making lists of all the cook books that I “need”. Then we go to Gutter Pop Comics were Jordan and the owner Stephen will talk about bands they recently heard while I try to convince him why it’s important to start watching Dawson’s Creek. Then we may catch a movie at the North Park because what better way to cool down than in a beautiful, air conditioned theater!
If you could choose your superpower, what would it be?
I just had to ask Google what the name of this power is – lol – Omnilinguism! Which is the ability to understand any form of language. I really enjoy traveling, so this superpower would allow me to adapt to any social situation that I may be in. The ability to fly came in at a close second because how could that not be cool??
Who would play you in the movie version of your life?
I asked my husband this question and he said Melissa McCarthy and I kind of love that answer! She has this ability to not only make you laugh but be this forceful presence. She was also the chef in one of my favorite TV shows of all time, Gilmore Girls!! Sookie killed it, which in a way, I feel like I’m doing as well. 🙂
