grassroots

What is a RevCommunity Ride?
Workout as a team with Colleen & Brandon for a strength-building, heart-pumping 60 minue Rev+TotalBody. Then head (as a team) to a special Revolution volunteer event in the Buffalo community. Do something good for your mind, your body, and those around you.

RevCommunity Rev+TotalBody, June 4: The Game Plan
9:45-10:45am: Workout!
10:45-11am: Quick drive to the assigned garden in Buffalo, NY: International School 45 at 141 Hoyt Street. (Carpooling/biking encouraged!)
11am-1pm: Raise garden beds and help with garden prep for the season.

We’d love to have you join us for this special opportunity to better our bodies, our minds and the community. A RevWorkout generates a whole lot of feel-good, do-good energy. Let’s share the love!

If you’d like to be a part of this exclusive Rev event, please reserve your spot here. Can't make the class but want to volunteer - email us at info@revolutionbuffalo.com to get in on the fun. It’s a great opportunity to make new friends, bond with your current friends (yes, they can come too!) and support a local organization that helps neighborhoods bloom all throughout the city.

Last year's volunteers hard at work!

Learn more about Grassroots Gardens.

Grassroots Gardens of Buffalo helps residents create and sustain community gardens on vacant properties in the city. Currently, there are 100 community gardens in Buffalo. These gardens beautify and strengthen neighborhoods, enable the productive use of vacant properties, and improve the overall quality of life for residents. Grassroots Gardens’ community gardens provide numerous benefits to the community, from greening neighborhoods through the planting of flowers, shrubs and trees, to providing fresh produce and herbs to residents who otherwise may not have access to healthy food. Other important benefits of community gardens include education – horticulture, urban agriculture, nutrition and health, neighborhood revitalization, building civic pride and rebuilding a sense of community in some of the city’s most disenfranchised neighborhoods.

Community gardeners share a common love of the City of Buffalo, a commitment to their neighborhoods and a belief that through hard work, initiative, perseverance and neighbor-to-neighbor collaboration, they have the power to make positive change happen in their communities.

Monday Motivator: Meet Sarah

Happy Memorial Monday Motivator! This chica is so dedicated to her fitness - there's rarely a day she isn't pulling a double! From the early 5:45am workouts, she takes a quick  water break and rolls straight into 7am classes. Keep up the hard work Sarah - you sure do make it look easy! Check out her Q&A below.

1. Tell us about your fitness journey.

I've always been very into cardio, but lazy when it comes to anything else workout-wise. That being said the rev combo classes really work for me because I'm forced to do the other stuff I'd normally skip. I also work out harder when I'm being held accountable, so it helps that Miranda attends nearly all the same classes as me. She really helps keep me in check ... otherwise I'd probably hit snooze every morning. ????

2. Describe your BWE (best workout ever) in three words:
One without push-ups.

3. What song are you currently obsessed with?
Florence and the Machine - Hardest of Hearts
Vance Joy- Mess is Mine
Ellie Golding- Army

4. Is there a mantra that motivates you:
Not so much a mantra but I definitely love the feeling I get after working out in the morning. It makes me a kinder, less stressed human.

5. What are two things you can't start your day without?
Checking Instagram for puppy and food pictures, copious amounts of water

6. The healthiest thing in my fridge right now:
Reduced sugar ketchup, which is actually life changing. Buy it.

7. Favorite way to spend a spring Day in Buffalo:
Brunching or patio drinking and feasting with my friends

8. This or that?
Cold pressed juice or coffee? Hmmmm I go to Squeeze anddddd Starbs everyday so that's an impossible decision.
Yoga pants or jeans: Lululemon. Always. Denim is the enemy.
TRX or Spin: Spin. I'm still struggling with TRX even though I think I've been at Rev since day one. I'm learning to like it more though, very slowly.

Monday Motivators - Mother's Day Edition - Meet Cae

The day after Mother's Day is the perfect day for us to have Caelainn as our Monday Motivator.  This soon-to-be mom has kept her energy levels up with a combination of Rev and Barre Centric classes. Cae's been making this whole pregnancy think look easy and we cannot wait to meet baby Macaluso in July!

Cae
1. Are there any songs that get baby/you all pumped up during class?
There are definitely times during class when the baby is kicking around more than others, and I'd like to think we're both big fans of mashups!

2. Giving into any cravings?
I wish I could say I was craving salads, but that's just not the case. Definitely lots of fruit, and always on the hunt for my next bag of crispy M&M's.

3. Boy, girl, or surprise? When is baby due?
It's a boy! Planning on making his first appearance July 13th :)

4. How has what fitness and nutrition mean to you changed since you started exercising and eating for two?
With someone else's health to think about other than my own, I'm more consistent with my workouts. I'm hoping I can teach this little guy about the importance of fitness too, and maybe he'll want to come running or spinning with me someday! But at that point he'll probably be too embarrassed to go out with his mom. Nutrition is more of a challenge. I try to be aware of everything the baby needs to be strong and healthy, so I'm making an effort to get all of my vegetables in. But I'd be lying if I didn't say a kale salad is often followed by ice cream.

5. What advice do you have for fellow pregnant ladies who are worried about keeping up their fitness routines during pregnancy?
Find a a fitness routine that works for you, and have fun with it! Most workout regimens can be pregnancy friendly with a few alternations here and there to accommodate your growing belly. The Rev team always understand if I need to take a few extra minutes in the saddle, or hop off for a quick bathroom break. Be kind to yourself, and listen to your body...it will usually tell you when you need to slow down, or can rev it up :) Fitness can be an enjoyable part of pregnancy that keeps you feeling good. I always try to think that I'm training for the ultimate workout ... labor!

6. How did you celebrate Mother's Day yesterday?
Lots of relaxing, making brunch with my own mom, snuggles with our dog Norman. Looking forward to the day post-pregnancy when I can incorporate mimosas back into a lazy Sunday.

This duo of ultra-motivating sisters is exactly what we need to get May movin' - meet Sarah & Jane! They're attached at the hip when it comes to their workout commitments pushing each other to work a little harder - and show up - when one of them might just not be "feelin' it." Get to know this inseparable pair below - and have a kick-butt Monday!

1. Describe your fitness journey.
Jane: Being the youngest of the family, I’ve always wanted to do whatever my older sister did. Sarah started working out, so, naturally, I had to too. I joined the BAC with my mom and sister when I was a freshman in college and have been going ever since (now LA Fitness). Sarah and I started going to a trainer and doing more classes a few years ago.
Sarah: Turns out, the freshman 15 is a real thing haha. After freshman year of college and gaining some weight, I joined a gym and got a personal trainer and haven’t stopped since. As Jane said, we both go to the same trainer now and love going to classes to change it up!

2. Best Workout Ever in 3 Words:
Jane and Sarah: Run on waterfront.

3. What song are you obsessed with right now?
Jane: “Don’t Let me Down” by The Chainsmokers and anything Justin Bieber.
Sarah: “Throwback” by B.O.B. (great for push-up’s and tap back’s J) and “Famous” by Kanye West. (Not a fan of his, but the song is pretty catchy).

4. Is there a mantra that motivates you?
Jane: As painful as it is going to the gym sometimes, there is no better feeling than a successful work out. I always tell myself I know I’ll feel better after.
Sarah: Usually, I just count down my workouts throughout the week (e.g., only two more left until a rest day; only one more left; etc. hahah).

5. What two things can't you start your day without?
Jane: An English muffin and a cup of tea.
Sarah: Coffee and toast with Peanut Butter (creamy only).

6. What's the healthiest thing in your fridge right now?
Jane: Apples and yogurt
Sarah: Zucchini Noodles and Watermelon

7. The Best Thing Working Out with my sister?
Jane: Whenever I don’t feel going to the gym or a class, it’s always nice to have my sister there to motivate me to go and to push harder doing our workouts!
Sarah: Working out with my sister is great for those days when I’m struggling to motivate myself because there’s always someone there to push you. And, having a workout buddy makes it go by quickly!
