Delish Veggie Pasta Dish

Don’t get us wrong, we love a good, hearty pasta dish. (Trattoria Aroma, anyone?) But we’re always on the hunt for new recipes that add healthy variety to meals. This new one is packed with powerhouse ingredients, high in protein (thanks chickpeas!), low in carbs and vegetarian. Carrot and zucchini noodles replace starchy pasta with a similar texture and lots of health benefits. Yum!

The deets
Carrots: High in vitamin A and other health benefits that include improving vision, clearer skin and anti-aging.
Zucchini: High in water and fiber, boasts anti-inflammatory properties and helps lower cholesterol.
Tomato sauce: High in lycopene, a naturally occurring chemical with red pigment. This phytochemical helps protect your heart, prostate and skin.

The ingredients
1 cup carrot ribbons
2 cups zucchini ribbons
1 cup chickpeas
1 tbsp. olive oil
1.5 cups tomato sauce
Salt, pepper & parmesan cheese to taste
Fresh basil to garnish

 pasta 2

The dish
Using a standard vegetable peeler, peel skin from carrots. Then peel carrots and zucchini into long, thin ribbon “noodles.” Rinse chickpeas in colander. Combine veggies in a sauce pan with olive oil and sauté for 10 minutes on medium. Mix in pasta sauce and cook for another three minutes for an al dente texture. Add salt, pepper and parm cheese to taste.

Rev Monday Motivators: Meet Robert

It's that time of the week again, get ready for your dose of Monday motivation. Each week we highlight the people at Revolution that we just can't get enough of. Their all around awesomeness needs to be shared with the world!

For this week's Monday Motivator, we chose the one & only Robert (aka. Lopez)! Keep reading, you'll love the story of where this nickname came from. We love the positive energy he brings to Rev. Meet Robert and read his answers to our five questions.

Ride for Roswell

1. Describe your ongoing fitness journey.
My journey began when I was five; my parents were active so I was an active youth. I spent a lot of time cycling, swimming, fishing, riding my motorcycle and snowmobiling (yes, at age 5!). Things slowed in my twenties when my priorities shifted, but don’t get me wrong, some of those dance party nights were quite the workout!! My thirties proved to be active but not in a cardio focused way. My jobs provided a physical outlet and helped me stay in shape, allowing me to eat all that chocolate cake! Ahhhhh, then came those forties…I hired a trainer by 41. That’s when the real workouts began - weights, TRX and cycling. Since that time, I’ve learned a lot and workout on my own 4 days a week. I still work with a trainer once a week to keep me in check and up to date on the newest workouts and research. I also still do TRX for the workout and camaraderie!! Not to mention every now and then I get a new nickname...

2. What's the number one most played song on your Ipod?
It changes often, but for the sake of a story….we’ll go with J-Lo - “On the Floor.”

3. What's your favorite Rev Class & why?
It’s hard to choose a favorite class when you have amazing instructors. I love the three of them for their dedication, motivation and hard work. They inspire me to work harder and improve my physical strength and core. That being said, I like all of the classes but tend to favor the strictly TRX classes.

4. Fave post workout fuel/snack?
Cliff Builder Bars, because they have protein in them.

5. What ice cream flavor best describes you?
Lopez-Ice Cream
Perry's Ice Cream - Cinnamon Buns. I took a poll of my friends plus it goes with the it turns out, TRX has quite an effect on your gluteus maximus (buns, derriere, dupka, butt, etc.). After a year of TRX classes, I developed a fuller, rounder, higher butt. This of course did not go unnoticed by my TRX friends who then compared my buns to the infamous J-Lo’s behind. They began calling me Lopez and still do. In fact, my buddy Max calls me “Uncle Lopez,” so it has traveled beyond my fitness family!

We'll take a TRX testimonial any day! Thanks for reading and we hope Bob's fit lifestyle helps you have a motivated week!

"I really regret eating healthy"... Said no one, ever.

Meal Prep photos_copy
A week's worth of healthy, pre-made meals!

Does anyone else out there feel like there is just not enough time in the day to work, get your exercise on and still find time to eat healthy without spending a fortune?

So many weeks, I would spend a fortune at Wegmans, only to toss out an uncut red pepper or an uncooked chicken breast. Throwing money away and not eating a healthy meal? Double whammy. I was never one to cook, so now with the hectic day to day that is balancing public accounting with running Revolution with Colleen & Rachel, it has become impossible. I have looked into some online meal delivery services and the price was entirely out of the question.

Then through casual conversation, a friend mentioned the Buffalo based meal service she and her boyfriend have been using, WTF Chef. Chef Pat Koch created “Wow the Flavor” (Yes, we all know what you thought WTF stood for) to prepare affordable and healthy meals, as well as to offer catering  and cooking classes. Here’s the real shocker: the cost is $4/meal. In a world where it costs $15 for a healthy salad at Wegmans, it is possible to have three pre-prepared meals for $12 a day. An example of a daily group of meals includes two eggs, a chicken sausage patty and oatmeal for breakfast, pork with cabbage and spinach for lunch, and chicken with snap peas and quinoa for dinner.

These healthy and clean options have replaced my typical slapdash lunches of salty canned soup and equally unprepared dinner of cottage cheese. I am now ensuring that I get the proper protein intake for the crazy amounts of awesome cardio I get in a day at Rev and already feeling so much more energized for it.  Check out his website here.

My favorite option - beef, whole wheat penne, kale & green beans.

Rev Monday Motivators: Meet Lauren

It's time for another round of Monday Motivators! Each week we highlight the people at Revolution that we just can’t get enough of. Their all-around awesomeness needs to be shared with the world!

We are so revved up about this week's Monday Motivator. Meet Lauren and read her answers to our five questions.

1. Describe your ongoing fitness journey.
I've always been pretty active growing up, so my fitness journey isn't something recent. I enjoy eating natural, healthy foods to fuel my body for my workouts. I love hiking, snowboarding, rock climbing and yoga just name a few. I have recently gotten into spinning and TRX, and I am loving it. It helps to have some awesome instructors pushing you and getting you to that next level. That's just a good day in my book. Life's too short and you need to be fit and healthy to continue your journey in life. And honestly I love my muscles, they're pretty badass.

2. What’s the number one most played song on your Ipod?
My number one most played song right now is "I Luh Ya Papi" by Jennifer Lopez. I don't know where I was when this came out, but I found it now and I love it. But you have to play it video music style with the ladies in the beginning. Gets me laughing, then it's just got that good beat and puts me in a good mood every time.

3. What’s your favorite Rev class & why?
Rev+TotalBody. I want the best of both worlds, so I spin my heart out and then get crazy on those TRX straps. I cardio blast away the delicious carbs I ate that day in jumps, sprints or my favorite, a climb in third. With the beat just right and with your body rocking side to side, I love it. Then it's TRX time. I love those guys. Every class I get further under the straps and I can feel myself getting stronger every week. A full body plank with crunches and pikes for 60 seconds?! Like, I can do that now! And to look back to where I started, it keeps me motivated.

4. Fave post workout fuel/snack?

My delicious protein smoothie. It has a banana, almond milk, peanut butter, whey protein, spinach, hemp protein and a few cubes of ice. It's so good. It's like having a milkshake but so much better for you.

5. What ice cream flavor best describes you?
Neapolitan. One scoop vanilla, one scoop chocolate, then a dash of strawberry (no strawberry chunks) in a bowl, whip it up. Then, boom! Soft serve ice cream. Add rainbow sprinkles on top. I don't really know what this ice cream says about me but I do know I'm like those rainbow sprinkles. Colorful, fun and bright!

Share those rainbow sprinkles with the world, Lauren! Thanks for reading and have motivated week, Rev Family!

Cauliflower Power!

Rachel decided to take a stab at this cauliflower rice that we have all heard so much about. So happy she did! It turned out so great that it is now a weekly staple. Cauliflower rice is easy to make and SO delicious. This is always key when you are trying to eat healthy and have some variety in meals.

1 head cauliflower
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil or coconut oil
1 small onion, diced
Coarse salt & coarsely-ground black pepper to taste
Spices, herbs, and/or vegetables of your choice

Wash, remove core and leaves, trim, and coarsely chop the cauliflower. Chop the fresh cauliflower into small pieces to fit into the food processor.

In a large frying pan over medium heat, heat olive oil. Add onion and sauté 10 minutes or until soft. Meanwhile, place cauliflower pieces in a food processor and pulse until the cauliflower is small and has the texture of rice. Don't over process, as the cauliflower can get mushy - you'll want a rough chop.

Raise the heat to medium-high. Add the prepared cauliflower to the cooked onions. Cover and cook approximately 5 to 6 minutes, stirring frequently, until the cauliflower is slightly crispy on the outside but tender on the inside (similar to "al dente" pasta). Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Remove from heat, serve, and enjoy!

Finished product:

cauliflower 2

Healthy facts:
• Cruciferous vegetables — such as cauliflower, kale, broccoli and cabbage are important for cancer prevention because they provide powerful antioxidants, anti-inflammatory nutrients, and they help detoxify the body. Eat about two servings a week to enjoy these benefits.
• Cauliflower is a fantastic source of vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant. 1 cup steamed provides about 90 percent of the recommended daily amount! It is also an excellent source of folate and fiber.

Rev Monday Motivators: Meet Noah & Gina

Welcome back to Monday Motivators: Valentine’s Edition! These lovebirds are just two of the people at Revolution that we can’t get enough of. Their all-around awesomeness needs to be shared with the world!

Meet Noah & Gina and read their answers to our five questions.

1. Describe your ongoing fitness journey.

“Before we started dating, Noah had never been to a spin class. Interrupting his sleep at 5:30am didn't last long before he jumped on the bandwagon. Pretty soon we were early morning partners at the gym. In the warmer weather we like to change it up by going for runs in the neighborhood, taking the dog for hikes, and participating in monthly 5k or 8k races. We both enjoy cardio so our challenge is improving our core strength, which Rev helps us accomplish.”
2. What helps motivate you to get out of bed for an early morning class?
“We are both educators in the city and definitely see the benefits of early morning workouts throughout our work day. Our energy levels as well as our positivity with the students is evident if we've spent the morning at the gym. Releasing feel-good endorphins is one of the best feelings and to do so before the sun comes up makes it even better. It's also nice to be able to look forward to a dinner or meeting up with friends after work and knowing you've already done something good for your body for the day.”
3. What's your favorite class at Rev & why?
“All the classes and instructors are wonderful, however our favorite Rev classes are when they incorporate both cycling and TRX. After our first couple of TRX sessions we had to laugh, because we literally couldn't move, we were so sore.  Now we can't get enough and we look forward to the TRX parts of each class. One awesome aspect of Rev is receiving a text from your instructor later in the day saying, "Hey, you were great today in class!” or an invite to attend a small, intimate class for extra technique practice with the TRX."
4. Favorite post workout fuel/snack?
Noah: “Occasionally pre and definitely post workout favorite is beer.”
Gina: “If it's an early morning workout, I go for eggs or Greek yogurt. In the evening we make it a point to eat dinner together, which typically consists of whatever produce is in season thanks to our crop share with Native Offerings and some type of protein.”

5. What ice cream flavor best describes your personality?
Noah: “Butter Pecan because like me it's a little nutty, smooth and classic.”
Gina: “Chunky Monkey. I workout to eat pizza.”

6. Bonus: What's the best thing about working out as a couple?
“Motivation! If one of us would prefer to sleep in, especially during these frigid, dark mornings or skip the gym for happy hour, the other is pulling for the gym. Simply put, it's just nice to have someone to exercise with.”

Rev Monday Motivators: Meet Brad

Welcome back to our newest edition to the RevBlog and social-sphere: Monday Motivators. Each week we highlight the people at Revolution that we just can’t get enough of. Their all-around awesomeness needs to be shared with the world! We’ve always got our eyes open for people who inspire. If you’ve got a RevDude or Revinista in mind who is your “Monday Motivator” let us know and we’ll do whatever we can to get them featured here.

We are so reved up about our second ever Monday Motivator! Meet Brad and read his answers to our five questions.

1. Describe your ongoing fitness journey.

“My fitness journey typically starts with defining what success looks like. For 2015, my goal is to achieve my ideal weight while balancing diet and exercise. I set daily fitness objectives and work hard to meet or exceed them.  This January, my focus has been on improving and perfecting my workout form. I stretch more often and attempt to maintain stability using my core.  Rome wasn’t built in a day and I’m aware that my journey is long. Recording my victories has helped me stay motivated and raise the bar. Overall, my long-term fitness journey has had some high points (14.4 mile run completed) and low points (damn you patio season). However, I haven’t crossed the finish line yet, nor have I given up.”

2. What's the number one most played song on your iPod?
“Most of my friends will joke that my taste in music is questionable, but I do love a good radio mash-up. Looking at my most played songs on my iPod, Nirvana – “Smells Like Teen Spirit” tops the list.”

3. What's your favorite Rev class & why?
“When I read about Revolution Buffalo, cycle-fit classes are what drew me in.  I absolutely love endurance cardio workouts. Having said that, when you survive the knee trembling, arms shaking, abs burning experience during an hour TRX workout, one can’t help but sign up for the next class.”

 4. Fave post workout fuel/snack?
This is a great question because recently I had been struggling to find balance between diet and exercise. My difficulty was trying to push myself to achieve my fitness goals without cramping up from a full stomach or crashing on an empty one. The Rev team suggested that I try an apple or banana with some peanut butter prior to my workout, then enjoying my dinner afterwards. Doing this has helped me stay on track. So what’s my favorite post workout fuel or snack? I would say whatever’s for dinner and a Lexington Coop Vegan Chocolate Peanut Butter Rice Krispie Treat as a little desert reward.”
5. What ice cream flavor best describes your personality?
“Silky Chocolate Swirl. Why you ask?  Because it’s smooth and irresistible.”

Brad, we think you’re pretty rad. Have a motivated week everyone!
