Monday Motivators: Meet Kelsey

We couldn't think of a better motivator for our very last feature of the year than Kelsey. A project coordinator at Eric Mower, Kelsey tried her first Rev class the first week we moved into our 1716 Main location and has logged 70 hours worth of class time since then. We loved watching her gain her confidence on the TRX (even though she's a cardio girl at heart)!

1. Tell us a little bit about your fitness journey.
Fitness was never a huge part of my life until Revolution, and I'm so happy that I found you guys. Actually, I give that credit to my good friend, and instructor Kevin Heffernan. He pushed me to give spin a try, and now there's no going back!

6. What's the oldest thing in your fridge right now?
Hmm... Probably that bottle of French's mustard. I don't even like mustard...

7. What's the healthiest thing in your fridge right now?
Greek yogurt for sure.

8. This or that? Choose one.
TRX or Spin: SPIN!!
Christmas or New Years: Christmas. I happen to be the world's best gift-giver.
Yoga pants or jeans: If it were socially acceptable to wear yoga pants everywhere all of the time, I would.

Monday Motivators: Meet Jack & Sarah

This classy couple of Sarah & Jack are motivating us to the extreme this week. From the TRX floor to the spin bikes, they hit up every combo of classes with every instructor we've got. Whether they can get to class together, or have to sweat it out solo, Jack and Sarah show up and work it. Read on for their super fun Monday Motivator answers this week!

7. This or that? Choose one.

TRX or Spin?

Thanksgiving or Christmas?

Tabata or Hill?

Monday Motivators: Meet Beth

Happy Monday, y'all! Kick-starting this week's motivation is Beth. She's been active since she was little, and has managed to maintain a high level of fitness and activity on the indoor bike and over at Barre Centric. Be sure to say hi to her this week and catch some of her awesomely positive vibes.

1. Tell us a little bit about your fitness journey.
I've always been active growing up playing sports since I can remember, and I continued soccer in college. Since then I started running more and taking classes. I used to live in Boston which is an awesome running city. I was also traveling for work constantly so I loved dropping in to spin, barre and yoga classes in all of the different cities I was working in. I moved back home to Buffalo last year, got off 'the road' and was THRILLED that Rev opened. I can't wait to continue my fitness journey right here at home with my Rev workouts!

2. Describe your BWE (best workout ever) in just three words.
Revolution + Barre Centric (my 2 favorite workouts, so excited about this collaboration all month!!)

Monday Motivator: In Amy Sue's Memory

This week, with love in our hearts and tears in our eyes we pause from our traditional Monday Motivator post to inspire life from a different perspective. Meet Amy.

Last week we lost this beautiful soul. A member of the RevFam since day one (and friend many years before that). Bright. Spirited. Youthful. Daughter. Sister. Leader. Teacher. Warrior. She touched lives, and whether she knew it or not, we consider ourselves better people for having known her.

We all had things in common with Amy, whether it was watching football, enjoying a margarita, traveling or accounting. Our hearts go out to Amy's family, friends and all those she has touched. She is gone way too soon but did not waste a second of her time in the this world.

Through death, we are reminded to live. To live fiercely. To live thoughtfully. To live lovingly. To live graciously. May the light of Amy’s life carry you through the ups and downs of the coming week. Life is too short. Love the one’s you’ve got.

Monday Motivator: Meet Diana

Good Morning, RevFam. New week. New Q&A. New Motivator. It's all about Diana this week, the cheerful, dedicated speech pathologist who does't let anything stand between her and her workouts. She's a runner and marathoner who has been working on her fitness game for years. Whether she shows up to class with her BFFs or solo, she always gets the work done.

1. Tell us a little bit about your fitness journey.
I started taking fitness classes around nine years ago in an effort to combat the “freshman fifteen.” A combination of fitness classes and running has stuck around as my fitness routine through the years. This past year at Revolution has taken my fitness to the next level. The spinning, TRX and combo total body classes have left me feeling stronger than ever!

2. Describe your BWE (best workout ever) in just three words.
Buffalo Marathon 2015 *which I couldn’t have done without my Revolution cross-training!!

3. What song are you obsessed with right now?
The Struts, "Could Have Been Me."

4. Is there a mantra that motivates you?
“I’m doing this for me” keeps me motivated to stick with my fitness routine. Working out helps me feel good physically and mentally. Taking a fitness class is also a time I can socialize and meet new people in Buffalo. The close knit community is one of my favorite parts of Revolution.

5. What are two things you just can't start your day without?
Coffee and cuddles with my dog Cooper.

6. What's the oldest thing in your fridge right now?
Some random flavored beers that were left over from a summer BBQ.

7. What's the healthiest thing in your fridge right now?
Probably some salad mix or apples. (I’m obsessed!!)

This or that? Choose one.
TRX or Spin: Can I say both?? It’s too hard to choose!
Avocado toast or cold pressed juice: Definitely avocado toast, my new favorite is at Tipico Coffee.
Yoga pants or jeans: Yoga pants, I always immediately change into them when I get home.
Nike or UA: Nike.

We Tried It! Sweet Pots & Cauliflower from The Fit Fork Blog

Sweet Potato & Cauliflower Mash Recipe - From The Fit Fork Blog
(The photo is ours - the recipe credit goes to The Fit Fork Blog.)

Thanks to Pinterest you can find any recipe (healthy or not) to suit your cravings. We were looking for something delicious (and - ok, a little healthy) to bring to a Thanksgiving party ... check out what we found! This would be good anytime, especially in the fall, party or not. We tried it. We loved it. Let us know what you think!

Ingredients: (Serves  4 – 6)

2 pounds sweet potatoes

1 pound cauliflower florets

3 tablespoons milk of choice

¼ cup plain Greek yogurt

½ teaspoon garlic powder

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh chopped parsley for garnish (or Instantly Fresh Parsley)

1. Peel and cut sweet potato into 1 ½ -inch chunks.

2. In large pot with steam basked, steam sweet potato and cauliflower with 1 inch of water in bottom of pot. Vegetables will be ready in about 10 – 12 minutes, or when fork tender.

3. Place in large bowl and mash the potato and cauliflower with the milk. Stir in the Greek yogurt, garlic powder, salt and pepper. If too thick, add milk 1 tablespoons at a time, until desired consistency is achieved. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley.

Thanks again to The Fit Fork Blog for this delish, healthy creation!

Monday Motivators: Meet Patricia & Paul

Time to learn more about Pat & Paul Macpherson - we know you will love them as much as we do. They started coming to Rev when we moved to Main Street to support Lauren, because that's what parents do! However, they quickly became regulars, hitting up every instructor's cycling classes, and then worked up the courage to give TRX a try. They haven't looked back since! Often on the schedule five times per week, we always know we will get a response from them to "How are you doing Rev?" while we're up on the podium!

1. How long have you been part of the indoor cycling world?
We have been part of the indoor cycling world now for about two months. However, we enjoy cycling outside as soon as the good weather permits. We have taken two trips to Abingdon, Virginia to ride the Creeper Trail. It is a 35 mile bike ride down White Mountain, cycling over 47 trestle bridges, past the Appalachian trail and through the most beautiful scenery.
We have ridden the trail that runs along the Erie Barge Canal for as long as 50 miles once. The bike trail at the river starts for us in the City of Tonawanda and goes as far as the Erie Basin Marina (33 miles round trip). We frequent this trail often. Another favorite has been the Peanut Line in Amherst, running through Clarence to Akron (22 miles round trip). This Summer we also bicycled the Pine Creek Rail Trail in Pennsylvania (about 20 miles) until a flat tire put an end to the day's ride. Finding new trails to ride is always fun!
How about TRX?
We have only been part of the TRX world for about a month. TRX was a little intimidating in the beginning. We didn't know if we were really ready for it until we were more confident in the cycling classes. TRX will make you feel muscles you didn't know you had. If you are new to TRX, it helps to have a good sense of humor. There will definitely be a lot of grunting and crazy faces while you are learning.

2. What goals has Rev helped you to achieve?
Taking one of our daughter Lauren's classes and experiencing what she loves was our first goal. But she got us hooked pretty quickly. Losing weight and feeling fit has been secondary. Both of us have lost weight and now have energy we didn't have before starting these classes.

3. Fall is here! What's your favorite way to enjoy the season?
When Fall arrives, so does hockey season. So having a beer and sitting down to watch a little hockey is a favorite past time in Fall.

Also, every year we get tickets to a Buffalo Bills game. It has become a tradition to enjoy an afternoon at the Ralph watching some football and baking in the sun.

4. Tell us a fun fact that we don't know about you.
Pat: I love to bake, read, garden (indoor and out) and spend time with our pets (dogs, a cat and a couple of birds). I will try anything. I have built bird houses (not very good) and one beautiful doll house - complete with electric stove and working lights throughout. Last year I tried my hand at a quilt. It was beautiful, but the constant hunching over the sewing machine to finish the quilt put an end to my back and my yoga that year. Revolution has got me back to where I was before I hurt my back and maybe even stronger than I was before.

Mac: One fact that you don't know about me is that I like model railroading. The goal is to try to create a real world in miniature. Being an engineer, I like the old steam locomotives. I think they were majestic machines that you could not help but sense the power they had.

5. What song really gets you Revved up during spin & TRX classes?
Pat: Most of the songs we have been listening to at Revolution are a little new to us. In one of the first Rev ride classes I had, the song "I Take Ya" by Kolombo played. I had never heard that song before taking the class. This song was stuck in my head for approximately two weeks in a 24/7 loop. Very catchy tuneI think any song that has a good strong beat makes me want to keep pedaling.  And although sometimes the really fast songs have a way of tripping me up, with every class I can see improvement.

I guess the one song that really gets me revved up during the class is "Bun up of the Dance."  Every time I hear that song I just want to turn up the resistance and start climbing a hill.

6. How do you keep each other motivated to work out?
I nag him until we get out the door and moving in the car. :0) No seriously, we both love class, but sometimes it is a bit of a race to get there on time after work. But I would say the most motivating factor is the class itself.  We really feel great afterwards. Tired, but great!

Taking Care of Business!

Successful career

Last month, we featured the newlyweds of Rev as our Monday Motivators. The focus was on how sweating together keeps relationships strong and helps keep both parties on track. This goes beyond couples and applies to friends, co-workers, or your potential new friend on the bike next to you.
I recall reading an article a few years ago about how sharing “painful” experiences builds bonds. The discussion spoke of working out together (a good and very temporary pain!), as well as situations like tasting the hottest pepper in the world - a ghost pepper. Where are we going with this? There has been a very visible shift to health consciousness, in which business meetings are being held over an exercise class and a healthy breakfast, rather than the traditional dinner and drinks setting. In New York City, one company even has a standing reservation EVERY morning for four bikes at SoulCycle, encouraging employees to bring coworkers or clients along (that's about $150/day).

Buffalo, a city never left behind by the trends of bigger markets, is keeping pace. We’ve had a slew of corporate classes at Rev, and their frequency is picking up pace. We've seen finance advisors, marketing and advertising teams, sales teams, accountants, teachers and more! Women's Health magazine calls this "Sweatworking," and we dig it!

Sweatworking defined

Exercising with colleagues helps build a relationship that goes deeper than talking shop. We often get in that rut with co-workers where we find that the only topic of conversation is work related. Workout together? Boom, now you can send an email the next morning about how sore you're feeling or which song really got you to push a little bit harder. There's now a whole world of conversation open: fitness goals, favorite workouts, what works for you and what doesn't, healthy meal options, the list goes on. It's a lot easier relate to a colleague, especially a superior, when you've shared the same experience together.

This focus on health is not limited to group fitness classes or relationship building.  Many people sit at their desk anywhere between 6 to 8 hours a day. Combine that with the convenience of fast food and the craziness of everyday life, it's a recipe for an unhealthy lifestyle. Employers have been finding the importance of corporate wellness programs to help mitigate health care costs. Many companies, Lumsden McCormick included, use some good old-fashioned competition to get people moving.  Employees with FitBits participate in a competition to see who is getting in the most steps. There is really no better way to get a bunch of accountants to be conscious of getting up and moving around during a busy tax season. While Lumsden McCormick has it's own wellness committee that meets and comes up with plans to keep everyone healthy, other companies hire the likes of Carly Kennedy from Lawley Insurance (a kickbutt client of ours!) to develop and implement worksite wellness. Many employers are finding that in order to be competitive when hiring, they need to offer these kind of extra benefits to be competitive.

This push towards being mindful of health and wellness in the workplace is a great step towards a happier, longer life, and who doesn't love that?

Monday Motivators: Meet Cassie!

Cassie has been rockin' her workouts with Rev for what feels like forever now! She's a workout machine, dominating both TRX and spin - getting the best of both worlds most days of the week. Be sure to say hi when you see her in classes this week. Her dedicated, positive vibes are contagious!

1. How long have you been part of the indoor cycling world? TRX?
I have been spinning for about 10 years ... It is the only form of cardio I can do and not be bored out of my mind! My first TRX experience was at Rev back March and I have been hooked ever since.

2. What goals has Rev helped you achieve?
Rev has allowed me to actually find enjoyment in working out ... which is a goal in itself.

3. Fall is here! What's your favorite way to enjoy the season locally?
I love drinking hot cider spiked with something special.

4. Tell us a fun fact we don't know about you.
I am a cat lady in training.

5. What song gets you really Revved up during spin and TRX classes?
I love the new "Jackpot" song. It makes climbing those hills fly by.
